After having left the public reporting of coronavirus-related hospitalizations up to the state, the Santa Cruz County Health Services Department began publishing its own data this week.

And the numbers it’s reporting are significantly higher than the state’s, indicating that the hospitalization of county residents had been underreported to this point in the COVID-19 crisis.



The death earlier this month of a 72-year-old man who worked at a local produce warehouse puts a spotlight on workplace safety practices, and illustrates the challenging decisions that employees and employers face as COVID-19 spreads at a quickening pace throughout the community.



After installing a rapid-result COVID-19 testing machine earlier this month, the NextCare Urgent Care clinic in Nogales is adding three more to meet high demand.

Local political organizers and elected officials say that the COVID-19 outbreak is going to alter the political process in upcoming elections. But Santa Cruz County organizers aren’t all taking the same approach to politicking during the pandemic.
